Description
A Nebraska native prized for its value to pollinators. Shades of orange flowers bloom virtually all summer and are a nectar source for butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. Additionally, its leaves serve as an important food source for Monarch caterpillars. Flowers turn to seed pods that release silky-haired seeds in the fall. This plant thrives in poor, well draining soils and is drought tolerant. One of the last perennials to emerge in the spring. It’s important to be aware that all milkweed will inevitably host aphids, but this is a great food source for beneficial, predatory insects such as ladybugs, who will keep populations under control.Photo courtesy of Walters Gardens, Inc.For reference only:
