Description
Looking for something truly distinctive for shade? Consider this tropical looking golden standout with large, compound leaves that can reach up to 3′ in length. An ideal companion to hostas and woodland perennials, ‘Sun King’ emerges in mid spring with vivid gold foliage carried on contrasting reddish brown stems. With at least a few hours of sun each day, the leaves stay bright yellow throughout the summer. In deeper shade, the color shifts to chartreuse or lime green. This plant quickly develops into a substantial clump of foliage and, remarkably, resists deer browsing. It is commonly listed at 3′ tall and wide, although many plantsmen believe it will grow larger with time. In mid to late summer, the plant produces attractive racemes of tiny white flowers, followed by deep purplish black, inedible berries.
