Pines are versatile evergreens more tolerant of harsh sites than spruces or firs. They have few serious pest problems and can handle a wide range of soil and temperature conditions. Eastern white pines are soft and graceful with open, irregular form. They need some protection from wind and prefer fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Stowes Pillar has a compact, columnar form. Moderate growth rate.
