Pines are versatile evergreens more tolerant of harsh sites than spruces or firs. They have few serious pest problems and can handle a wide range of soil and temperature conditions. Swiss Stone pines form columnar pyramids in youth, becoming more flat-topped as they mature. Site in open areas where air can move freely around the trees. Silver Whispers is compact and dense, with large, blue-violet cones. Slow growing.
