Pines are versatile evergreens more tolerant of harsh sites than spruces or firs. They have few serious pest problems and can handle a wide range of soil and temperature conditions. Swiss Stone pines form columnar pyramids in youth, becoming more flat-topped as they mature. Site in open areas where air can move freely around the trees. Prairie Statesman is a dense, symmetrical columnar pyramid with soft needles. Slow growing.
