Pines are versatile evergreens more tolerant of harsh sites than spruces or firs. They have few serious pest problems and can handle a wide range of soil and temperature conditions. Mugo pines are slow growing dwarf forms. They can be pruned annually to thicken the plant and help retain the small size. Slowmound is considered an improved Pumilio that stays compact without pruning.
