European Beeches are beautiful specimen trees with dense growth creating a formal outline. The stout trunk has smooth gray bark that gives stunning winter interest. Slow growing, preferring fertile, well-drained soils. Site with late afternoon shade to protect the leaves from scorching in extreme afternoon heat. Purpleleaf Weeping doesn’t have a dominant central leader, so it forms a broad, mushroom-shaped arch. Foliage emerges deep purple, fading to bronzy-green in the heat of the summer.
