Pond Calculations
Note: These stocking factors are suggested. The larger the pond the less applicable they are. Larger ponds
are easier to balance then smaller ponds because water temperature does not vary as much over a twenty-four
hour period.
Location: Water garden requires 5-6 hours of direct sunlight to produce water lily blossoms.
Floating foliage: Cover 40% to 60% of pond surface. Water Lilies, Floating and Lily-like aquatics)
Oxygenating Plants: One bunch per two square feet of surface area. Press plants or cuttings (rootlets
develop within two weeks) into soil and/or coarse sand covered with ½ ¾ gravel.
Fish: One inch of fish for every one square foot of pond surface area.
Snails: One per 1-2 square feet of bottom surface area.
Tadpoles: Same as snails.
Estimatingating Number of Gallons of Water in a Pond:
There are 7.5 gallons of water in one cubic foot. Multiply the number of cubic feet by 7.5 to get the number of
gallons.
Assuming vertical sides and a level bottom, to find the number of cubic feet in a rectangular pond multiply
the length by the width by the depth (l x w x d). Make sure to convert inches to feet before multiplying.

Estimating the Needed Size of the Liner:
- Find the size of the smallest rectangle that will completely cover the pond. To find the needed liner length
take the length from the rectangle and add the depth twice and then add one (L + d + d + 1). To find the needed
width use the same method (w + d + d + 1).
